mika vainio - time examined 2 X CD + BOOK

In the past 13 years, Finnish experimental electronic musician Mika Vainio has exhibited in some of the major art spaces in Europe, and has collaborated with a number of important artists and curators. Since his musical work has been in the focus of attention, his installations have never gained the broader recognition they deserve -- without good reason. In this book, an overview will give a clear outline of this segment of his oeuvre. Also, his realized soundtracks for other artists, in the genres of video, film and dance are included. Each work is presented with a significant selection of images (installation views, visuals or sketches) and an explanatory text gives context and delivers its basic idea. In the two essays, Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Daniela Cascella -- longtime companions and collaborators -- delicately introduce Vainio's conceptions to further enlighten the reader's understanding. On CD1 all tracks originate from the installation and soundtrack pieces presented in the book. CD2 is a reissue of his 1997 collaborative release with Carsten Nicolai -- Ø + Noto, Mikro Makro. 92 pages, color/monochrome. Texts by Daniel Klemm, Daniela Cascella, Carl Michael von Hausswolff.($46.50)

yellow swans - going places

In April 2008, American noise duo Yellow Swans (comprised of Peter Swanson and Gabriel Mindel) announced their decision to split. The news was a shock to the noise community, not least because the band had become a regular fixture in the live arena – touring incessantly and garnering a huge, dedicated following in the process. What the duo neglected to announce however was that a final album was already in the works, and while they would not tour together again, steps were being taken to finish off their crowning achievement.

‘Going Places’ is Yellow Swans’ conclusion as an entity, and sees the duo looking inward to create their most introspective work to date. It shouldn’t be surprising given the climate in which the record was put together, but without the constant touring Swanson and Mindel allowed themselves to take their time on the record and allow the tracks to breathe somewhat. The resulting collection is distilled and reflective, retaining the grit and damage of their earlier work but adding layers of harmony and, maybe more surprisingly, pulsing rhythms. The improvisational, psychedelic washes that have always enriched their sound are tempered and controlled, leaving an almost Kosmische narrative. The drifting, subtle beauty that characterised their last album, ‘At All Ends’, has emerged even further in the mix, and Mindel’s guitar is allowed to play foil to Swanson’s piercing noise. Comparisons could be made to Tim Hecker or even Brian Eno in parts, but Yellow Swans’ harsher edge sets them apart from many of their peers.

No doubt some listeners might be put off by Yellow Swans’ noise background, but make no mistake, ‘Going Places’ is one of the most haunting and engrossing albums yet to appear on the Type label. Swanson and Mindel have proved, if proof was ever needed, that there is beauty in dense cacophony, and ‘Going Places’ is the perfect way to close a startling career.($13.50)

bersarin quartett - bersarin quartett

RESTOCK With some albums, you realize within a few seconds that here you have come across something really special. It is music that touches you straight away. Music that is important, that has a story to tell – and that manages to do so without even a single line of lyrics.

The debut album by the Bersarin Quartett is one of these albums.

Wonderful orchestral pieces full of longing and melancholy. It is that certain kind of melancholy that seizes you when you are moved while following the final credits of an emotionally touching movie, remembering special moments that have faded in the course of many years and linger hazily in your memory, when you are somewhat wistfully contemplating old, worn photographs from days passed by…not a feeling of failure or hopelessness, but a bittersweet reflection.

Time and evanescence. This is the matching soundtrack.

Orchestral cinemascope sounds provide the emotionally moving fundament, wrap the tracks up in a warm coating. Graceful strings pile up, creating big moments and repeatedly ending in melodies that are simply heart-rending, cinematic and tragic. But the Bersarin Quartett does not merely rely on these ingredients. The songs are also repeatedly interspersed with suspenseful and surprising elements, be it frail electronica, hypnotic soundscapes, drums or reverbed guitars. Rarely has a melange sounded as convincing and natural as this, and rarely has it sounded so well produced.

Thomas himself calls his music “imaginary fictional filmscores“. And it is hardly possible to come up with a more apt term. 10 tracks for 10 movies that have yet to be shot. Music that radiates such an enormous and authentic passion in every single minute, that one can’t help but completely abandon oneself to it. And honestly: Can there be anything more wonderful that can be achieved through music?($11.25)

when the clouds - the longed-for season [PRE-ORDER]

[*** PREORDER****] When the Clouds is the recording project of artist and producer Franceso Galano of Salerno, Italy. Francesco has a strong passion for art which has led him from an early age and culminated in his decision to study Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. At age 13, he had his first brush with making music via a broken acoustic guitar which he'd received as a gift from his uncle. From that moment on, his life was divided by two passions: art and music. While playing in several bands as a teenager, he also began composing music on his own. Francesco released his first demo in 2004, under the name Eid Ethyca, called “White Noise, Awake Memories”. This early project was close to the musical dimension he'd later finesse as When the Clouds. One notable difference being, voice was an important component to the song structure. With When the Clouds he's focused more on sound, spending time studying and obsessing over musique concrète's textures, noises and glitches. As a result he's steered towards instrumental music, and began to incorporate acoustic instruments in his sound. His focus on more organic sound, he's started to make extremely narrative instrumental electronic music that in and of itself tells a story. In each of these tracks, each listener could define in words or images something different. Inspired by the pastoral beauty of nature and its evocative power that holds sway over him, When the Clouds' very name can be left open to interpretation, just as any viewer can find shapes or meaning in the clouds themselves as they pass overhead. The Longed-For Season is a six track tapestry that reveals more and more of itself with each listen. Equal parts restraint, masterfully crafted tension and euphoric release that will leave listeners lost in thought.
interconnected - current flow

Interconnected is a collaborative electronica/ idm/ experimental project between Bakis Sirros
(of Parallel Worlds, Memory Geist) and Ingo Zobel (of DRON, Signalform, Self Oscillate, Data-
sette).

Both guys are heavy into analogue modular systems which makes their sound very unique and organic compared to other artists in the electronica scene who hardly use any hardware
anymore.

Their debut album “Current Flow” is a sonic trip where frequencies take on real life form. Each song takes you on an aural voyage to explore new worlds beyond your imagination. The opening track “Greenerblue” brings you smoothly into this new world while other tracks like “Deepestsespeed” give you the impression that you are wandering around that cold surface for ages.

The design of this release might seem a bit dark first, compared to the music itself, but it represents a so familiar ally and yet so mysterious during the night, the unknown.($13.00)

snog - last of the great romantics

recorded over 2008/2009 in melbourne, berlin and prague, snog’s “last of the great romantics” is truly a landmark album. like radiohead’s “ok computer” and pink floyd’s “wish you were here” (to both of which it
has already been compared) “last of the great romantics” sees a beloved band at their conceptual and creative peak. from the blazing space-rock-ballad of opening track “we’re all in this together” to the
languid moog-boogie of “the end of the world” to the disco-metal pyrotechnics of “wargasm” snog forge their own path and their own sound, bold, uncompromising and just a little bent. recorded entirely in analogue facilities using a vast collection of vintage studio equipment with special guests including john justin stewart (grace jones), neil boyack (angler), the city of prague philharmonic choir and
produced by the calculators (the faint, schneider tm) “last of the great romantics” is a lush, sincere masterpiece.

early 2010 also marks twenty years since snog first entered a recording studio to put down “corporate slave”, their first ever single and a left-field industrial/electro/agit-prop dancefloor hit way back in
1992. don’t make too much noise about it (because it makes the band feel a bit long-in-the-tooth) but do pause for a moment to ponder the ever-changing (and to some people the just plain confusing) nature of
snog. never generic in any form snog have in various incarnations donned the costumes of electro/industrial/spaghetti western/folk/country and electro-punk-funk music but the core has
remained steadfast - songs that grapple with the innate and important stuff (or at least “how low can humanity go?”). so take a few moments out from your busy day to wonder what this crazy world of ours would be like without the sometimes sneering, sometimes sentimental sounds of snog and if the urge strikes you, go stand naked in the sunshine eating an organic mango - because that’s what david thrussell is doing right now too.($13.00)

somatic responses - neon

john and paul healy a.k.a. somatic responses are aurally focussed on complex dislocated & broken beats, distorted intelligent constructions, fascinating sonic structures, force and sweetness enlaced. their early
productions' main focus were on hardcore and techno, later on they expanded the musical regions up to electro, dubstep, and even breakcore territories.

as a diligent confluence of these styles, 'neon' is a dark, claiming caleidoscope of state-of-the-art electronic sound mastery. dubstep beats are combined with dark ambience and manipulated voice samples.
fast, heavy breakbeats are mixed with distorted synth lines creating an industrial music flair. drum and bass meets electro sequences. pulsating subbasses and acherontic synth lines induce a multitude of moods between aggression, disarray and melancholy... this album show how these icons of the challenging electronic scene are still able to open their ears and tap fresh ideas from today's music sensbilities.($13.00)

defrag - lament element

'lament element' presents a dynamic collision of power electronic styles. crushing distorted beats, lush melodic soundscapes, and massive sub-basses collide with idm edits and dubstep grooves. a perfect bridge between the distorted aggressiveness of drum'n'bass and idm's complexity. imagine scorns minimalist grooves on speed overdosed with dubstep injections. riding eclectic curves between styles, jeff dodson calls into battle an assortment of punishingly heavy tunes, boosting the tension and emotion to unimaginable dimensions. "the title itself literally means 'the reason to sing for the dead'. although not a literal application to anything, i intended it as a question: 'what's the reason people write passionate music?' that and a name should just sounds great." (defrag). indeed it does, try it!

in 2000, jeff dodson and matt flego created an industrial/noise experiment called bitstorm. as the duo started playing out more and more, they eventually gained the attention of several record labels and decided to make invisible records their first home. as production on their first full-length album 'self construct' began, jeff and matt decided from that point forward to pen their work under the name defragmentation. 'self construct' received critical acclaim from all over the globe and soon the duo developed a hardcore cult following, and the fan given name of defrag. in winter of 2004, matt flego departed defrag to explore other paths, and soon after his departure, jeff found himself at a crossroad. he could either shut the project down and continue his budding career in motion graphics, or he could take a chance and keep defrag going. committed and very stubborn, he decided to do both. in 2004 jeff picked up the project and moved to los angeles where he continued doing motion graphics and simultaneously built his own home studio and library or personal audio work. he left invisible records in the hope of starting fresh. soon after relocating, jeff decided to expand his motion graphic business (www.rainfallfilms.com) to also include sound design and music composition (www.runsilent.org). by using the same signature sound that made defrag unique and applying it to his commercial work, jeff soon had a line of 'a-list' companies and corporations begging for his music to be in their projects. before too long jeff’s music was popping up in ad campaigns, video games, and theaters for such clients as nike, g4 tv, ferrari, jägermeister and philips, as well as projects like x-men 3 the official game, and the massively successful legend of zelda film trailer. he was invited to speak at one of the most successful motion graphics and music festivals in the world, the offf festival in 2009. during this time jeff redefined his own music and the music of defrag. finally, in 2009 jeff decided it was time to get back in the music industry and was recruited by hymen records, where he releases the first defrag album in five years.($13.00)

[***PREORDER***] Near the Parenthesis returns with "Music for the Forrest Concourse". Tim Arndt's fourth album for n5MD. Perhaps becoming a theme, Arndt again uses the concept of place as the muse for an album. An approach adopted with 2008's "L'Eixample" where Barcelona served as the inspiration. Time, however, is the inspiration for the current release and as a result Music for the Forrest Concourse is more imaginary. Arndt wrote this collection of music 'for dusk, for open air, for sitting down, and for breathing in. It is music for staring upwards and listening attentively or casually.' However you choose to listen Music for the Forrest Concourse will provide many rewards. [***SHIPS MARCH 15***]($11.25)

(originally released in 2009 on n5MD's digital imprint Enpeg Digital) is being rereleased on CD. Ruxpin is Icleandic electronic music composer Jonas Thor Gudmundsson and Where do We Float From Here? is his 6th long play. Gudmundsson has released on labels such as Uni:form Recordings, Elektrolux and Mikrolux, had many compilation appearances and has done many remixes for artists such as Mum and Worm is Green. Ruxpin's sound is firmly planted in the classic braindance subgenre of IDM.
bitcrush - of embers [PRE-ORDER]

[***PREORDER***] Those that keep a close eye on Mike Cadoo's Bitcrush project may have been somewhat concerned with the title of his previous full-length, Epilogue in Waves. That album, by Cadoo's admission, was to be the last of his cathartic Bitcrush entity. Thankfully, writing music is an integral part of Cadoo and has become an important means to understand life. Now, two years later we see the release of Cadoo's fifth album from his Bitcrush project 'Of Embers.' Of Embers is his most intimate album and continues with the very personal cathartic nature we have come to expect. Cadoo has always transitioned between and fused together diverse styles seamlessly and with each album has moved the Bitcrush meme towards his personal needs of expression. Of Embers begins where the Epilogue in Waves' song Pearl left us. Presented are longer movements each that progress and tell their story patiently using the sound that has grown to become the Bitcrush norm. Of Embers is an hour in length, yet boasts only six tracks; three tracks over 10 minutes and two of those approach the 15 minute mark. Of Embers finds Cadoo looking even further back into his experiences and inner struggles than ever before to create what may be the most hopeful album of his musical career. [***SHIPS MARCH 15th***]($11.25)

[post-foetus] - the fabric

Joy, true joy, is a difficult emotion to genuinely express in music. It reaches beyond those familiar poppish chords and notes and melodies, beyond a mere line of words in a set of lyrics, beyond a mere suggestion.

Yet joy is precisely what 20-year-old Will Wiesenfeld, a.k.a [Post-foetus] emanates from his album, The Fabric, a beautifully crafted, multi-instrument emotional music playground of pure joy and absolute beauty.

A sonic adventure so pure, so genuine, so intimate yet so magnificent in all its delicate layers of inviting voices, warm sounds, playful beats and dreamy, blissful melodies, that it flows like breaths of splendid zephyrs, wondrous waves and waves of true joy from the speakers straight to that timeless place of smiles we all keep in our heart of hearts.

[Post-foetus] presents a perfectly balanced blend of classical instruments and dream-pop electronica, a vibrant sonic tapestry of heart-throbbing viola, piano, upright bass and guitar melodies trailing, cruising and ingeniously intertwined, layered with moving electronic percussions, ambient sounds and sampled voices, as well as a dreamy, expressive and honest vocal performance that wears its heart naturally on its sleeve.

This album is mü-nest's first American artiste's release. Though still deeply rooted in mü-nest's core niche of sweet, melodious electro-acoustic music, it marks an expansion to mü-nest's usual repertoire with joyous, solid sounds that holds a presence in the air while maintaining a strong emotional sensitivity.

Smiles. Smiles is what The Fabric would simply render.

For joy comes from asserting the longings of the heart, the unspoken hopes, the dreams, the fantasies, the intimate moments we hold dear, and thus is The Fabric.($12.00)

starke - a letter from yesterday

Arriving with the warmth and brightness of the rain showers of summer, ‘A Letter From Yesterday’, the debut album by Starke, is altogether a document of that inner peacefulness, the encircling captivation of the undisturbed, and pleasant moments of everyday. Consisting of members Shunichiro Fujimoto, known for his glistening, acoustic-ambient magnificence as Fjordne, and Yushi Mori, renowned as an extremely talented and unique visionary of percussion, through bands such as ミーティア気象台 (Meteor Kishodai), Å, and Under Groove, the two artists have come together to produce an astounding work displaying tenderness, the understanding of reflection, in a comforting melody of those peaceful moments of yesterdays.

Originally created by the duo as an escape to the gloomy weekends of bad weather, secluded inside homes, Starke have created not only warmth from this solitude, but a presence of something more welcoming, of the existence of a softhearted surrounding, soaking with that imagination of wishing, of those experiences we all hope for. Field recordings and found sounds add dashes of realism into acoustic environments as they transform into moving moments, kept close, while drum rhythms swell in soft anthems of lightness, and exploration. Such is the upswing of these passing emotions, given even more consistent beauty through the beautifully-lended vocals of Fuyu, allowing everything its own place, and trace in tranquility.

Displaying an endearing spirit throughout the albums’ existence, ‘A Letter From Yesterday’ touches the moments of these endless days, whether staying in the comfort of a home, or entering the outside world. Upon visiting the outside again, after a rain, everything feels so much different, with sparkling rejuvenation, and a promising hope of the beauty for the future. Further bathed in pianos, whirls of strings and dotted with processed, soothing pops, Starke entrust listeners with their experience of amiability, character, and spirit, producing ‘A Letter From Yesterday’, which is a just and beautiful, exemplary model of the splendor of everyday life.($12.00)

v/a - in this nest, we found our winged tales

Voices, melodies, and trailing reverbs of tender sounds, gliding through the echo-spheres of your heart, like light birds of sublime feathers flocking to strange yet familiar distant lands beyond reality; once again, mü-nest brings forth a collection of quiet simple wonderment, the remix compilation, in this nest, we found our winged tales.

Featuring an exquisite international line-up of some of the most revered Folktronica and IDM musicians from around the world, including Japan’s Haruka Nakamura, Akira Kosemura, aus, FJORDNE, UK’s Dom Mino’, me:mo of China, hearts+horses (previously known as park avenue music) from US, Federico Durand from Argentina, Singapore’s aspidistrafly and Malaysia’s flica, the numbers here are laced with the same magically trails of ethereal tunes that is mü-nest’s usual forte – the soft enthrallments of simplicity, the courting sounds of delicate moments and the charm of immaculate tranquility.

This remixed gem of a compilation is created by pairing ten of these internationally venerated artistes into 5 groups, and with each group, a cross remix of works between the artistes.

Thus, as the album title suggests, these musical, winged tales glides side by side as each piece is transformed and recreated with the most riveting, delightful touches, leaving the most subtle but transcendent ripples with its layers of tinkling electro-acoustic hook lines, soul-tripping ambient, electro-infused dreamscapes, captivating rhythms and cutting-edge noise pop, created with the infusion of original beauty and renewed sensibility.

The cover art is also a major highlight. Created by award winning Hong Kong illustrator Bubi Au Yeung, it is an enthralling reflection of the pieces themselves – sweet and colourful, with an emanation of tranquil beauty that engages on multiple enkindling musical emotions.

Like wizards exchanging spells of enchanting wonder, winged tales is a splendid musical experiment that trails lightly but surely upon the deepest, most graceful recesses of our mind and soul, tantalizing with every exquisite detail, a superb musical experience that lets us bask and dwell in the most dreamful, beautiful of sublime serenity.($12.00)

The stress-free morning air, a breeze, the relaxing distant sounds and ambling clouds, a close friend, good coffee, a good book… the simplest, unassuming, undemanding pleasures of life distilled into the finest melodies that course through you like beautiful, ethereal tourists, lifting you in a sense of appreciation for all the little pleasures that are often took for granted.

Thus is the magic of folktronica duo rist’s debut album weekend, which was amazingly conceived when they were on a week-long vacation, recording one track per day.

Like the relaxing tranquility of a well-deserved holiday, weekend showcases 10 tracks of ethereally entrancing music that presents the beautiful compositional capabilities of rist, merging heart-warming musical prowess with a delicate, captivating sensibility.

An enthralling musical journey filled with layers of dreamy Rhodes and piano, tripping guitars, chromatic glockenspiel, enchanting beats and percussions, peace flute and bright synthesizers. Fusing various instrumental sounds together with expert subtle beat programming, weekend trails the beauty of simplicity, building minimal wondrous soundscapes, bringing a comforting serenity, a calming splendour that gently soothes and charms, drawing from the most subtle sublime touches of urban reality.

weekend is a stature of musical excellence that does not enthrall with contrived ostentations, but rather the simple desires for a thoroughly soul-charming, tranquility filled music experience.

Also on this album are the masterfully remixed works by some of today’s most esteemed folktronica musicians and composers, namely Taunus from Germany, .tape. from Spain, as well as Greg Davis from the United States, with mastering by Ricks Ang of Kitchen and album jacket design by euseng seto, a.k.a flica. The gorgeous cover photo was taken by April Lee of Kitchen.($12.00)
